My Sister Hat
Full confession.....
I have never really had a birthday party. I remember going to birthday parties and seeing other kids have their special day. I remember one year my birthday was completely forgotten which always sucks. No it wasn't one of those TV sitcoms where you get home later and realize it's all a joke and a surprise party was waiting for you. This is not Full House! I remember one year I went to a friend's birthday party where they had a clown and a Minnie Mouse! We got a little too rough with Minnie Mouse, and later the clown walked us to his car and showed us that we hurt the teenager that was in the suit. We were just excited to see her, we didn't intend to hurt her. Man, we were jerks.
But this story isn't about me. In the spirit of Sisterhood, after watching "Frozen 3" via the series Once Upon a Time which is a great show on Disney Plus by the way. I want to write about my sister, Trisha Rene Rodriguez who is now Trisha Rene Aranda. Always Rodriguez to me.
I can't remember what birthday it was, it would have to be somewhere around her 7th, 8th or 9th birthday. I remember my sister having a birthday party. It wasn't something that my family planned, she just took it upon herself to grab life by the balls (as if it had balls) and go for it.
She created her own invitations. I can't remember what they looked like for the life of me, but I imagine she decorated them with her own crayons and paper, possibly some cut out shapes. I don't remember helping her with this in any way shape or form, I really do think she flew solo on this one. Although we usually were partners in crime.
She took the invitations to school, parents not knowing what will transpire that day. Handed them out to her friends and invited them over to our house for her birthday party. When she got home she let our mother know her friends were coming over for her birthday party at 7, I made that time up. I have no idea what time she told them to come over.
.
I can just imagine the shock on moms face, but she had a choice to make. Brake little Trisha’s heart and cancel the whole darn thing or not. I’m glad she chose the latter. At this point mom went to the store got a cake, pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey, and a couple of other things to decorate. Trisha willed her birthday party into existence.
Kids came over and I'm sure we had a good time...
“Feliz cumpleaños a ti, feliz cumpleaños a ti. Feliz cumpleaños querida Trisha. ¡Feliz cumpleaños a ti!”
The candles were blown out, shouts of joy and a slight push of her face into the vanilla frosting as I took off running out the front door. I am sure an adult told me to do this, I just can't remember who. After all what kind of Mexican party would it be if someone didn't get their face pushed into a combination of sugar, butter and flour?
I ran through the front yard, freshly cut grass. We started throwing cake. I just remember there being cake on the floor, and I had to clean it up! I got bit by ants, call it my "Just Desserts!"
I admire my sister, she decided this is what I want and made a way.
I love you sis.
You can have your cake and eat it too!
Happy Birthday.
I dedicate my first official blog post to you, plus it's a cheap gift!
